Global Deaf Renaissance

Global Deaf RenaissanceThis is the motto of the 16th World Federation of the Deaf congress which will take place from 18th till 24th July 2011 in Durban, South Africa. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) organizes this congress every four years to offer academic discussions and personal interchange. This year’s topics include Education of the Deaf, Sign Language and Studies About Deafness, the situation of the Deaf in so called developing countries and Human Rights for the Deaf. The speakers will come from all over the world. The WFD and the Deaf Federation of South Africa have organized a manifold program to accompany the congress including movie and theater shows.

From Kenya, George Otieno will participate as representative for Kids of Maseno, as well as Nickson Kakri for the Kenya National Association of the Deaf. They will tell us about their experiences and impressions soon.

On 16th and 17th July, the general assembly of the World Federation of the Deaf will take place. Among other things, the members have to decide where the next meeting is to take place. Candidates are Istanbul, Mexico City and Berlin.

About the WFD:

The World Federation of the Deaf was founded in 1951 in Rome and is an active international NGO and umbrella organization of a total of 130 national member organizations. Thus, it represents about 70 million Deaf people worldwide out of which 80% live in so called developing countries. Its head office is in Helsinki, Finland.
