Here you can see some pictures of the contruction work of the children’s home.
Our main project goal is to build one building for a children’s home for Deaf and Deafblind children in Maseno, Kenya. The place of the children’s home is located in Western Kenya next to Kisumu along Kisumu-Busia road. The area is called Lela market, half a kilometer from Maseno School for the Deaf. Local groups, associations and many other people are working together to find the best sustainable way to support the children. In total we are planning to build three houses, each of them includes eight rooms. Three rooms will accommodate the children, the other rooms are for care takers, visitors and future interns.
Friedericke Geiger is already in Maseno (since the 22nd of August 2011) and Charlotte Tasso will follow on the 18th of September. Both interns are going to spend three months in Maseno at the School for the Deaf. Soon they will share their experiences and adventures with us here. We wish them a wonderful time in Kenya!
Sweat, muscles and power were needed on 25th June 2011. Maseno became the place of a special festivity for the deaf and deaf blind which has never taken place before in Kenya. The organizers mixed sports, fun and information to create a charity run to raise awareness for deaf and deaf blind people in the region. They also aimed at presenting some of their projects, as said Austine, one of the organizers: “We hope that through the event, various organizations may open their eyes to come and join hands with Kids of Maseno to improve our activities.
The event started on Saturday morning at 9:45. Elivs Kurgat, District Children Officer, fired the starter’s gun and the runners began the 10 km track through Maseno. Neighbouring schools, deaf blind and deaf children and other community members participated.
